Road trip day one!

Well, we ended up hitting the road around 6. It was a little later than we wanted, but we still beat the sun! As we were driving down the highway in Kentucky, I glanced behind us and saw the sun coming up over the mountains.
We crossed over into Indiana pretty early in the day and it was so cool when we went into another time zone! . After that, we got into Illinois, which has just tons of fields for as far as the eye can see. I thought Kentucky had huge fields, but the ones we saw in Illinois were massive. I had a great time just looking out the windows and taking in the sights. Oh yeah, did I mention I actually got to be the passenger for the first half of the trip!
After Illinois, we crossed over into Missouri, and about 20 minutes later, we saw the awesome arch in downtown ST. Louis. It is so big! Then we drove on some back roads on our way to rt.44. We stopped down the road a ways at a candy factory and found a building that claimed to be the worlds largest gift shop. We decided not to go in, since we are trying to make good time and we probably would have been in there forever!
After a while, we realized that we were traveling parallel to rt.66. We really wish we had more time, because that would be a great ride. Eventually, we crossed into Oklahoma, where we could literally see fields for miles. We came across a huge area with tons of windmills.
At the end of our day, we saw the sun setting in Oklahoma. Now we are exhausted, and going to sleep as much as possible before heading back on the road tomorrow. I wonder where we will see the sun set then?

Louisville

On Wednesday, we took a trip down to Louisville, and walked around the waterfront park. Its really beautiful, but it was hot hot out, so we didn't stay too long. After a short time, we headed over to Bardstown road. Its a cool strip of little shops and restaurants. Kind of like Northampton times 100! We did some shopping there and then headed home.
Yesterday was even more uneventful, we mostly hung around the house. We made another great dinner and then went to see Lenas dad in his big ol truck.
Mostly we have been saving our funds and energy for this week coming up. We are super excited to say that tomorrow morning at 5am, we are hitting the road and heading to Arizona! Lenas dad has the week off, so we decide why not take a road trip!

Hot!Hot!Hot!

We have kind of had a slow week, the weather has been fluctuating between horrible hot and unbelievable thunderstorms. That being said, we have mostly opted to stay in the past couple of days. On Monday we did venture out to find a general store we heard about in our research. When we got there, it wasn't terribly impressive, so we just grabbed a couple of sodas and headed back to the house to cook some dinner and feed the rabbits that visit the yard.
Yesterday, we did get a little farther in our adventures. We started off having a good ol' southern lunch, complete with fried green tomatoes and fried corn on the cob! We ate at a restaurant down the street called Our Best, and it was a wonderful lunch! When we were checking out, we asked the man at the register if they had any postcards or business cards that we could have for a keepsake. He ended up being the owner of the restaurant and told us that in the 25 years he has owned the place, no one has ever asked if they sold post cards. When we told him where we were from, he kindly gave us a bag of cornmeal to take home with us. Everyone is so nice here.
After that we headed out to find a cemetery from the Weird Kentucky book. It took a ton of driving around, but we finally came upon the Eastwood Cemetery. It was a tiny little place with some interesting stones. We didn't spend too much time there, because the heat was just about overwhelming. So, we headed home and made some dinner and spend the rest of the evening relaxing. Again, there was a storm brewing in the sky, and we watched clouds that almost looked like they were going to form a tornado in the field next door. Luckily the storm passed without incident.
Today, the weather is much calmer and cooler. We just cooked some lunch and are about to head out to find another adventure! But we will have to wait until later to tell u all about that!

Oh the weather

It took about an hour to go from downpour to sunny skies. Now that's what i call a passing shower!

Happy Fathers Day!!

Happy Fathers Day to my dad! Its funny how we take things for granted. Living with my parents, its just kind of a given that I see them everyday. I really don't think too much about how lucky I am for that. Being nearly 1,000 miles away from my dad on Fathers Day, I have a better idea. Here is to hoping my dad has a great day.

Yesterday

Well, yesterday we had another one of those slow easy days . We really didn't do much of anything until about 6 last night. We drove down the road to a little gathering called music in the park. It was nice, but we didn't stay too long, it was pretty hot out. We did get some pretty good home made baked goods, so that was cool. That was about the extent of our day, but as always, it was a great time :)

Big Bone Lick and other various things...

What a wonderful day. We began our day with some lunch from the gas station down the street. Yeah, that might sound funny, but the gas station sells fried chicken that is better than any chicken we have had near home! After lunch, we headed down the highway in search of Big Bone Lick state park. Honestly, we sought it out because we thought the name was hilarious, but we ended up really loving what we found.
One of the cool things about this park is the "outdoor museum" that has huge statues of wolly mammoths and elephants. Evendently, a very long time ago, these huge animals came to this park in search of salt licks. Sadly, when they got here, they walked right into swamp land and became stuck. So, the outdoor museum is like a tribute to all the animals who died in search of salt.
As we hiked on, we saw signs that said "bison viewing area". We assumed the bison would be statues just like the elephants and mammoths, but as we came to the end of the trail and approached a field, we found out those bison were actually real! After our hike we hit up the gift shop and then headed on down the road.
Our next stop was Rabbit Hash. This town is so cool! It is one of the smallest towns in Kentucky, as a matter of fact, its so small, the mayor is actually a dog! Her name is Lucy Lou! Unfortunately Lucy wasn't around today, but we still had a great time walking around the little town.
After that, we headed back home where we made breakfast for dinner. And now, we are totally beat! Hopefully we will have more adventures to share tomorrow!
